I realize not everyone has family heirlooms to give away, but my grandmother was downsizing and gifted her grandchildren pieces from her Fostoria Glass collection that were my grandparents’ wedding gifts back in 1945. My great-grandmother made a lot of her gifts.

My mother grew up on a farm, and from her accounts my grandmother and grandfather (who also was a foreman at the local glass factory, along with being an independent farmer) were frugal, and sometimes times were tight. My grandpa would shoot squirrels when they needed meat, and they had a big garden and my grandmother baked her own bread.

I’m pretty sure I always sang it as Grandmother’s house, which is weird since we actually went to my Grandfather’s house for holidays. The day starts/started with my mother or me or now my daughter getting up and stuffing the bird and getting it into the oven. Then my daughter required mashed potatoes.
