Have you ever shopped at neighborhood garage sales? Well, I had to research this one as I’ve lived in the same home for 26 years now and have only changed out the paint once (repairing all those holes the kids put in the walls with their dart boards!) and still have the wedding furniture we bought 44 years ago!

Garage sale and thrift store furniture bargains abound. Although upholstery material can be very expensive (think $25+ a yard), you can find it on sale. Older pieces may have different types of finishes on them too, so you need to figure out what is on there to know what you can put on top of it. Updating the look.

After all, both Mom and Dad had been do-it-yourselfers and had trained me up to work right alongside them. Know what you are getting into with home ownership – it may not be cheaper than renting! When I go to garage sales, I see folks selling nearly new home decorations for a pittance.
