Years ago, Mom introduced me to the idea of going to garage sales. People sell the darnedest things at their garage sales. If you keep your head and are persistent, you can find many things you want or need, all in near perfect condition, for a fraction of the cost with NO TAXES due. I love a bargain.

Every year, I have a yard sale. It usually coincides with our neighborhood's big sale and I make out quite nicely with the profits. I've been tackling clutter since January and I had the boxes stacked in my garage to prove it. It's been awhile since I've taken a tax deduction over having a yard sale, so I did a little research.

Since my blog is set up as a business, I could deduct the expense – or at least depreciate the asset over time – reducing my taxes. So, hey, I guess I can take the tax reduction next year as well as this! However, I wait until spring and summer to buy decorations – and get them at garage sales. Winter clothes. Other tips.

Fashion changes and new or nearly new clothing gets sold at sales or donated to charity. For me, going to sales is not just a means to find things I need at rock bottom prices, it is also entertainment. Donate good clothing you really can’t use to a non-profit and bank the tax deduction. There have been countless times I have seen nearly new, decorator pieces being sold for pennies on the dollar at garage sales because the homeowner decided to re-decorate. Pass down serviceable clothing from child to child.

Check out some thrift stores, vintage stores, flea markets, and garage sales. Pick out your desired paint color at the hardware store and ask the sales person what you will need to paint a room. Sometimes, fabric stores will have sales on remnants up to three yards, which is ideal for upholstering a stool or side chair.
