Ben Franklin Crafts : This craft store offers 10% for educators each Tuesday.

Back when I was engaged and living on my own for the first time (I lived with my parents while in grad school to save on rent), I went to the library a lot and found a copy of the Tightwad Gazette. We rent now and are much happier. People are surprised that we are in our fifties and renting, but it works for us. Not at all.

When they got married, they bought a duplex so that the rent money from the tenant in the upstairs apartment would pay the mortgage. We, as a country, owe our young people a more comprehensive education. The banking experience helped, and I educated myself on investing as a young adult. That’s not right.

Did you ever receive any financial education in school or from your parents? I have a distinct memory of being taught how to create a budget and write checks in 5th grade, and because my formal education is in mechanical engineering, I’ve also been taught project budgeting & estimating. Yes to both!
