I’ve seen the nieces and my own kids ask for and get babysitting services time after time from a busy working boomer. Providing babysitting, funding for special projects or education and buying special treats makes us feel that we might have some influence. It never occurred to me to ask Mom or Mom-in-law to come watch my kids.

One of my nieces did this when borrowing for college. Now she has much more debt than her education should have cost. While it may be tempting to borrow ‘just a bit more than I need’, don’t do it. The excess money may just disappear with no benefit to you. Ask yourself if you are borrowing from the best place.
