If you lack spackle when painting, try dabbing on a bit of tooth paste. It saves time and money over a tedious refinish job. On really, really cold nights, we put an electric fan in front of the open under sink cabinets to circulate warm air into it. Spackle substitute. This works best for small holes. Dining chairs.
