I volunteer at my kids’ school at lunch time and other events. We have a big family, but we live in a small house – we use bunk beds and make do. I teach because I love my subject and it gets me out of the house. I like to bake and read, and I spend time chauffeuring kids to activities and games. That is priceless.

Something tells me there were some harsh words between the two events. Plus, it can be really inconvenient to “make do or do without!” Do you have a funny story about making do? It sure wasn’t long after that Dad installed an indoor bathroom! Poverty is subjective. Poverty is inconvenient.

Americans pride themselves on their ‘Yankee ingenuity’ – making do or doing without. Taking steps to prepare in case of a bad turn of events is a smart thing to do, but not if it becomes all consuming. However, I have longed to have those back up systems in place. We live in our time, not theirs.
