Growing up, I remember my mom always sending me out to the composting bin with a bucket full of (what I thought was) gross bits and pieces of food waste. I never understood why anybody would want to keep all of that stuff, or why my mom sent me to the very back corner of our large yard with it so frequently.

Limiting waste is what really drives most of the habits I have that would qualify as “frugal” – reducing/eliminating food waste, returning unneeded items, pursuing refunds, checking on warranties, repairing things, etc. For me, being in the kitchen and making food for people is an act of love.

My fiance and I are hosting Christmas this year, which for me means that my mom and stepdad are driving from my home town to spend the week with us, and my aunt is coming from about an hour away to feast. This allows us to cash in on the savings without watching our money go in the garbage by food waste. Cutting Down.
