We were poor, Mom and Dad lived every day showing us what it meant to ‘make it do’ and we often ‘did without’ Here are my thoughts on frugal ways to make things do. Instead of taking the family to a movie, have a home movie night with friends and family. Buy good clothing, used. Use up your food.

The truth is, there are plenty of things our grandparents and great grandparents did that were eco-friendly and frugal that we can easily do today. Here are some simple things our family does to be more environmentally friendly and to save money: 1. Instead of having oodles of clothes, our family is minimizing our wardrobes.

If you’d like to take an easy step to go green and save money in the process, the first place to make changes is in buying disposable items. I was surprised to learn that many families use these at every meal rather than real plates so they have fewer dishes to do. You can often by these cheap at garage sales.

I had three baby showers when I was pregnant for my son–one from each side of the family and one from my co-workers. Many of the other items I needed like cloth diapers and clothes for the baby in bigger sizes I bought from garage sales. I’ve seen friends of mine spend hundreds of dollars per season on their infants.

The family honored her with a family and friends celebration in the Missouri History Museum. I already had saved up a box full of wine bottles, in hopes of selling them at my next garage sale, so we didn’t have any cash outlay for those. The third week of March was my Mother-in-laws 90 th birthday.
