For 20 or so years I’ve been homeschooling my kids, and am now down to about 1 1/2 (one full-time homeschooler, and one doing College Credit Plus with some support). I live in the Great Lakes region, in the same state where I was born. We rent now and are much happier. Maybe four years? Biggest mistake ever.

When they got married, they bought a duplex so that the rent money from the tenant in the upstairs apartment would pay the mortgage. My biggest financial regret is the amount of money we spent on restaurant meals from the time we were married and both working full time to when we had kids. Alan doesn’t share that regret.

Is there anything unique about frugal living in your area? My parents were married for 7 years before having kids, and during that time they both worked – my dad is an engineer, and my mom’s a nurse, so they made pretty good money! They had me, and then my mom decided to go back to school full-time and get a PhD.
