There have been countless times I have seen nearly new, decorator pieces being sold for pennies on the dollar at garage sales because the homeowner decided to re-decorate. Instead of taking the family to a professional sports game, attend a little league game near your home and cheer on the neighbor’s child.

These are the times they will remember, long after they have forgotten who gave them that video game they love to play! Hold a garage sale together. Build a bean bag toss game and award prizes to those who hit the hole. Play old time outdoor backyard games. Hold a grandparent camp. Pick a duck.

Many of the other items I needed like cloth diapers and clothes for the baby in bigger sizes I bought from garage sales. Instead, they used their imagination and created games to play. Go Frugal Go Green' All those items got plenty of use as all three of my kids used them. We Love to Spend Money on Our Children.

However, I wait until spring and summer to buy decorations – and get them at garage sales. On their personal finance site, US News suggested that some kids get games they don’t want and can’t be returned. I always shop for Christmas wrapping paper, gift tags, boxes and really nice ornaments the week after Christmas.

I purchased a few packages of silver and lime green balloons for less than $1 each and some ribbon for $2 that we used to decorate with as well as for playing some of the games. I’d wanted to to play a game of pin the lightsaber on Darth Vadar, but my husband searched all over for a Star Wars poster without any luck.
