Years ago, Mom introduced me to the idea of going to garage sales. People sell the darnedest things at their garage sales. Garage sales take time, you have to hit quite a few before you find the item you want or need. I look for the neighborhood sales, which are usually either in spring or fall.

I love going to garage sales. Last summer, a lady on the street next to ours had a wonderful sale. I found a brand new magazine rack for 50 cents, a 2 foot diameter artfully crafted wreath for $10 and a FREE WHEELBARROW. Free is good, right? Someone offers to pass along something to you at no cost, should you take it?

I used an old seat cushion I had and wrapped it with brand new material from another garage sale to pretty it up and make it softer, then stacked new throw pillows I found at yet another sale for $.50 I used it for years and sold it – for $25 – last summer in my own garage sale. Glass leftover containers 3 for $.75.

For small packages, find interesting magazine pages to use in wrapping. Shop garage sales and thrift stores and estate sales. Christmas decorations, wrap, bows and ribbon all are continuous offerings at pretty much every garage sale, thrift store or estate sale I’ve ever shopped.

You can visit garage sales, local flea markets and scratch and dent stores to locate used furniture that needs to be refurbished. You can use fabric that coordinates with or contrasts other pieces in your room to cover an orange crate to create a magazine and newspaper box. Look around your apartment for inspiration.

Garage sales – need I say more? Magazine suggests that you be aggressively low with your first offer (for example if you are negotiating a discount on a new refrigerator at Lowe’s – start with a discount of 70% off retail!). Magazine article, it sets that person at ease and establishes rapport with them.
