We spoiled our children and we apparently are even more intent on doing so with our grandchildren! They rarely gave us toys or money. My parents were somewhat more interactive with their grandchildren (my kids). They provided Christmas and birthday toys and on occasion provided direct financial aid. It’s just fun!

My grown kids are also savers and I have high hopes that the grandchildren will follow their example. Helping the parents teach my grandchildren to save is an ongoing project of mine. While the grand-kids savings account alternatives are slim – save in a piggy bank or buy that new toy, adults have a few other options.

Whether you’re trying to save money or just limit the amount of stuff in your life, it doesn’t make it cheap to gift your friends and family ideas from this list. Make scarves, mittens, socks, or Christmas ornaments. If you have recipe cards with the family member’s handwriting, make copies. Family Heirlooms.

Last summer, in my annual ‘Grandma Rie’s Money Camp’ (the week long camp I have with my Grandchildren to help them learn about finances); we had a segment on selling and how companies sell to us. In it, they took apart some kid toy commercials and showed exactly how the various cool effects were created. Reciprocity.

As I prepared to hold a Money Camp for my young grandchildren last year, I researched various educational standards to review what kids can learn at various ages. They start to notice that you can trade toys, or trade money for stuff (like a ride on the grocery store pony or candy at the checkout aisle). Make change.
