School started after Labor Day and ended after Memorial Day. Cheap (not just inexpensive, I mean cheap – easy to break) toys came from post-war Japan. Heck, there were barely chain guards! There were lots of kids to play with (we were the baby boom after all). Kids walked to school. Alone or with a friend.
