My Aunt, God rest her soul, saved Christmas paper and those silly little paper bows from year to year. She would very carefully (and slowly) unwrap her gifts so as to be able to preserve the paper. She also scarfed up any other gift wrap that looked usable, and she stored it carefully away for use the next year.

From food waste to packaging to disposable items, there are a lot of resources being used by humans. Pay Attention to Packaging. Some items come with more packaging than they need. Whenever possible, consider items that don’t have excess packaging. Nor is it healthy. Pay attention to that when you buy.

My favorite thrift store has a section dedicated to seasonal items. The number and variety of Halloween items in this thrift store surprised me. Decorations were usually either home made or paper with the exception of one carved pumpkin. Costumes were typically home made but sometimes came from the dime store.

In an effort over the years to save money at the grocery store and reduce our waste, I’ve found reusable alternatives to many paper products that we were using. Examples: Replace paper napkins with cloth napkins. Invest in a silicone baking mat to replace parchment paper. Choose thrift first.

Thrift stores are also a great place to shop. Other treasured items we reuse every year include huge a mottled green glass ball ornament from my grandparents, a set of 1950′s angel candle holders from a favorite aunt and two 3 foot tall paper nutcrackers made by my kids in elementary school in the 1980′s.
