If it breaks, consider taking it in to get a repair. For example, don’t overload your washer, as that can put strain on the motor inside; you can find out how big a load should be from your user’s manual, or sometimes there’s a line inside the basin. If this is the case, save up your wash loads and dry them all together.

Upon more online research, my husband felt the new repair would be beyond his ability, so we started looking on Craigslist. I’m doing less wash now, and the laundry comes out of the washer much dryer than before, so time in the dryer is less. Fortunately, my 17 year old dryer still works like a charm.

Back then, there was a shoe repair shoe in every town. Don’t use a hair dryer to dry them out as this can damage the leather. We used to wash our canvas shoes in the washer or the sink with detergent (and then put that liquid white shoe polish on our white ones!). This helps the leather last longer.

Upon moving in, we needed a washer, dryer and refrigerator. I didn't and I found this article helpful, How to Avoid Refrigerator Repairs. This September we will be celebrating 10 years in our home. The house came with very few appliances. Do they have filters that need replaced regularly? 3 - Have appliances serviced regularly.

As a wedding gift, my parents bought me and my husband a brand new washer and dryer. The moral of the story--don't assume an appliance is beyond repair, especially a do-it-yourself repair. Just a few weeks ago, I was smugly admiring the fact that the set was still working very well 12 years later. Until Saturday.
