This all goes back to having an emergency fund and paying yourself first. My family would not have survived without that emergency fund. Just think — if you could shave $200 off your grocery bill using coupons and you put that money in the bank each month, you would have $2400 at the end of one year.

Multi-pronged answer here: historically it was hard-wired in my DNA as a necessity but also being a good steward of what we’re blessed with & being able to give/help others; having enough for emergency funds was always a high priority as well. Cost comparison or coupons-my time is limited.

At the time, Bed Bath & Beyond was going out of business and Big Lots was accepting their coupons, so we scored an additional 20% off discount. I also opened another Capital One 360 account for our emergency fund that was also sitting in a zero-interest savings account. In total, we have made $250 in interest since April.

Now is the time to watch every penny that you spend, so that you can purchase more in the same budget or even better, put that money in emergency funds. Though using coupons certainly helps, there are other ways too. We know that times are tough. I mean, really tough. You just need to put them in practice.

Cut coupons, go grocery shopping when your items are on sale, and you will save money. This is not to say you should turn into an extreme couponing person, although if you can make it happen, more power to you. Medical emergencies, car emergencies, or family situations may arise where you need to dip into your emergency fund.

You can cross-reference your food storage list to sales flyers and coupons if you are really looking to save. Check off items as you get them, and that will let you to go “out of order” when you find coupons for something further down on the list. Each week, buy something on your food storage list.
