I hate strongly dislike debit/credit cards. My simple solution was to just nix the cards and use cash. A Dunn & Bradstreet study found that people spend 12-18% more when using credit/debit cards than when using cash. The last time we went on vacation, the ONLY debits we had were for gas and the hotel.

While they would not reimburse us for the rental car, they also gave each of us a $50 credit to be used within a year. Ask and ye shall receive!
