I earned a free ham at my grocery store in December, so I baked it on New Year’s Day. Found Money in January: I have an old savings account that I hold on to, because it’s at the same bank as my kids’ savings accounts. I stick to my list and random delicacies aren’t falling into my cart.

I then divided that new number by 12 and that is the dollar amount that I am going to transfer to a savings account every month. I'll use that money through out the year for birthday gifts along with Christmas presents in December. I added up what we spent on gifts for the entire year in 2010 and reduced that by 20%.

Download another budget (but save under a different name) for your other yearly gift giving. Gift giving isn’t just a December sport. If possible, set the money aside in a separate savings account earmarked specifically for gift spending. We need to plan for gift giving all year long.

It is a big change for us, but I was able to put some of that difference towards our Christmas savings account. At the beginning of March I was still $40 behind from January & February, but I transferred $125 to our account this month and I'll aim to get the $15 in April along with our $100 goal. On the spreadsheet below, you’ll see that the December bills were quite high. We had high deductible health plans from 2004 – 2016 and contributed many years to a health savings account. We used those funds to pay for our medical bills in 2017 and that account is now depleted and closed.

We must start saving for retirement again , we need to start college saving accounts, and it would be nice to take the kids to Disney while they’re still princess fans. We paid off our first renovation loan in December 2014 and the next loan should be paid off by the end of this summer.
