We bought a lot of our son’s onesies and other items (including a crib) at a consignment shop. Garage sales, estate sales, and moving sales are all great places to look for used furniture. Another benefit is that I am cutting the governments out of the loop – there no sales taxes on used stuff (except big things of course, like boats or cars). Here is a short list of some of my favorite finds at garage, estate and thrift store sales. I used it for years and sold it – for $25 – last summer in my own garage sale.

Garage sales – I found a guitar for $5.00 once at a garage sale and bought it for my grandson. Musical instrument exchanges – some sites let owners list and buyers browse used instrument sales. We rented our son’s alto saxophone while he took lessons in high school. Find A Used Instrument.

I had three baby showers when I was pregnant for my son–one from each side of the family and one from my co-workers. Many of the other items I needed like cloth diapers and clothes for the baby in bigger sizes I bought from garage sales. There was very little I had to buy for my child after these showers.

I took at least three trunks full of “stuff” to Goodwill, I had a garage sale, and I sold things online. I’ve taken pictures of my son’s favorite preschool paintings and drawings, and when I see a good deal on photo books, I’m going to create one for him and toss the originals.

Garage or estate sales. My son had a tile cutter which he loaned to me. Possible sources include: Neighbors or real estate investors who tore out perfectly good materials and want to get rid of them. Thrift shops. Make it yourself items. Internet sites offering goods for trade. Craigs list.
