Rent instead of own. If you calculate your mortgage interest, the cost of insurance and maintenance, buying can be much more expensive than renting. And if you rent, save money and then invest the difference. And as an added bonus, leftovers make a great lunch the next day. Be comfortable, but don’t overdo it.

Back when I was engaged and living on my own for the first time (I lived with my parents while in grad school to save on rent), I went to the library a lot and found a copy of the Tightwad Gazette. We rent now and are much happier. People are surprised that we are in our fifties and renting, but it works for us.

Every year, we split the rent on a beach condo with other family members to make a week away affordable for everyone involved. We also don’t want to come home to a credit card bill. Usually there is enough leftovers for the last night to be a ‘clean out the fridge’ night. Our summer destination of choice is the beach.

If the weather is nice, we may rent a pontoon boat and explore. We’ll use any leftover quick service credits at the food court on sandwich boxes to go. I’ll just take all of my checks to the bank before we leave and get large bills to pay off our balance when we check in. Sleep in and then go to Kona for a late breakfast.

At the time we were renting an office space in a strip mall, but when we discovered a foreclosure in our town that seemed like a great idea on paper, we jumped at the chance. Our bills and responsibilities didn’t waiver however, even though our income dipped. “Unfortunately, life doesn’t stop when shortfalls happen.”
