It is not easy to be frugal and save money when you have a family that splurges and squanders. Being frugal is a family affair. It should be exercised by each member of the family or else the money that you save by your frugal ways will just be wasted by another member of the family on something that is not essential.

According to the July 15, 2010 Back to School Survey from the National Retail Federation, the average family spent around $600 per child for back to school needs, split between clothing (37%); electronics (30%); shoes (17%) and school supplies (16%). Bulk buys can be a lot cheaper. Rent Don’t Buy. Buy don’t rent.

The best way to prioritize your expenses is by looking at your immediate needs and the immediate needs of the family to get a better grasp of which ones to pay first. For the meantime, do not buy by the bulk. You cannot afford not having a roof over your head or shelter for your family.

Create a Budget You guys know me by now; you know I am all about creating and sticking to a family budget. Buy in Bulk Apart from using coupons, I advocate buying in bulk when at the grocery store. I do my bulk shopping at the end of the month, so I don’t have to spend too much of my weekly $300 on essential purchases.

I rented a booth in an antique mall in a neat old building out in a small town close by us and went out after antiques to fill it. To be successful, I think you need access to free or really cheap bulk sale items. You need to have a popular space that YOU own (and charge others to rent space) to display and sell your goods.

Back when I was engaged and living on my own for the first time (I lived with my parents while in grad school to save on rent), I went to the library a lot and found a copy of the Tightwad Gazette. We also like to have enough means to travel and visit family and friends, so being frugal in some areas helps us be generous in others.
