Years ago, Mom introduced me to the idea of going to garage sales. People sell the darnedest things at their garage sales. Garage sales take time, you have to hit quite a few before you find the item you want or need. I look for the neighborhood sales, which are usually either in spring or fall.

Have you heard the old saying: “Use it up, wear it out, make it do or do without.”? We were poor, Mom and Dad lived every day showing us what it meant to ‘make it do’ and we often ‘did without’ Here are my thoughts on frugal ways to make things do. Buy good clothing, used. Use up your food.

While I grew up using paper napkins and towels, we only used paper plates when we were on a picnic. I was surprised to learn that many families use these at every meal rather than real plates so they have fewer dishes to do. In fact, the Duggars of TLC’s Nineteen Kids and Counting use paper plates for every single meal.

We use the eggs, harvest meat & if I can’t get out to hunt venison we’ve had friends give us meat.

Clothing is cheap, sewing is not. We tend to throw away clothing instead of mending it and we count on cheap overseas labor to keep manufactured clothing easily affordable. I got 160,000,000 results today using Google Chrome. There are many crafters, clothing designers and beginning savers who sew.
