My own grandparents (members of the so called ‘silent generation’ who lived through WWI, WWII and the depression) rarely interacted with the grand kids.

My niece has an eye for vintage clothes and toys and has a thriving eBay business. Rent a room in your house. Facebook Marketplace (and local buy/sell groups) have made it much easier.
