We spoiled our children and we apparently are even more intent on doing so with our grandchildren! My parents were somewhat more interactive with their grandchildren (my kids). Why are we spending more on our grandchildren? We want some influence over how our grandchildren are raised. They tolerated our presence.

Although I live 200+ miles away from my two grandkids, I try to get them for a week or so during the summer. There are many documented benefits to utilizing grandparents to watch grandkids. I’m one of them. On special occassions, now that I’m retired, I go to their house to watch them.

When I was a young adult, out of college and into my first years of marriage, I cringed at the thought of getting money from my parents. Providing college money can help cushion that murky time between high school graduation and fully leaving the nest. I wanted to prove myself. Lots of grandparents help out with child care.

First, if I had managed to convert everything to a Roth, the grandkids would be swamped with hundreds of thousands of dollars a year. That money has to come from somewhere and unfortunately we all just keep kicking it down the road to my grandchildren. Your heirs will have to take all of that out within 5 years.

The Grandkids are 9 and 12 now with lots of time before they have to start supporting themselves somehow. That is why I started helping my Grandchildren explore the many careers that currently exist – so they see that there are other opportunities than what they have immediately around them. It didn’t.
