Investors are Playing a Game Where Those With More Experience Have the Upper Hand

Prairie Eco-Thrifter

There is a third, far less known, but far more useful (at least I think so) investment strategies known as Psychological Analysis. As you probably know, psychology is the study of how humans will respond to certain events. What I like about studying the psychology of other players in the stock markets is that investor (and human) psychology is the one thing that never changes. This post was written by Tony. As the saying goes, investing is an old man’s game.

Deciding What You Should Major in In College

Prairie Eco-Thrifter

I picked my major (psychology) because it happened to be my favorite course in high school. Never mind that I’d only taken Psychology 101, a beginners course, and that was my exposure in it’s entirety to anything psychology related. I did well in my courses, but I came to realize after only a couple of semesters that there wasn’t much I could do with a psychology degree. I remember in my first year of college, I was lost.

How to Pick A Career

Prairie Eco-Thrifter

Dr. John Krumboltz, Professor of Educational Psychology at Standford University studies how people choose careers. I majored in Psychology (liberal arts), graduating in the early 70’s. I didn’t even realize that most jobs required a doctorate in Psychology to really use the knowledge in a career. At my Grandma Rie’s Money Camp this year, we started exploring the different careers that are out there.

Why I Use Cash

Prairie Eco-Thrifter

You have a psychological advantage. If you are in a negotiation situation, and can flash the cash, you have a psychological advantage over your counterpart. As I read financial blogs, I find that a lot of bloggers seem to like to pay for everything with their credit card. Why not, they ask?

Brand Phobia is a Major Cause of Overspending

Prairie Eco-Thrifter

This is a kind of psychological situation which takes complete control of our will-power and judgement. It happens many times that you enter into a store for buying a product and you see your required product with two different names: one is brand name while other is local or simply new name. What you do? You grab brand product and don’t consider local product for a second.

The Spending Plan Mentality

Prairie Eco-Thrifter

in Psychology , says that what we call things, and how we think about certain concepts, can influence our behavior. While it’s probably more psychological than anything else, for us this mentality helps us feel happier about our lifestyle and money choices. I’m not much into budgeting. It’s true that what I do with money technically amounts to a budgeting technique, but the idea of a traditional budget has never appealed to me. It’s more of a mindset thing.

Why We Seek Happiness

Prairie Eco-Thrifter

Darwin agreed, according to Psychology Today article Happiness: ultimately it’s genetic! Do you want to be happy? Most members of the human race do. The pursuit of happiness is common across the globe. Why is that? Is there a greater purpose in the human desire to be happy? I think so. It seems to me that seeking happiness is built into our evolutionary requirements. I think we are hard wired to seek happiness.

The Worst Financial Decisions I’ve Seen

Prairie Eco-Thrifter

One reader commented: “From experience, I’ve found that all my financial issues had roots in something psychological going on inside of me – so until I cleared that up, I was NOT going to listen to anyone else or even admit I had a problem.”. We all know people who can’t seem to make any good financial decisions – ever. We all make bad ones occasionally. I know I have made my fair share of shaky ones.

Are You Middle Class?

Prairie Eco-Thrifter

Although that probably wasn’t true, by the numbers, it was true for us psychologically. I bet your gut response was YES. When I was growing up (poor), Mom and Dad raised me to think that we were better off financially than our neighbors. Accordingly, I learned to think we were a middle class family. After all, we were just as good as the next family, right? Sometimes it seems that it is almost un-American to NOT think you are middle class.

Theoretically, it is possible to be happy no matter what the external circumstances.because one’s emotional state is a function of how one interprets events, rather than what actually happened, as reflected in Milton’s famous saying, ‘The mind is its own place, and in itself cam make a heaven of hell, a hell of heaven’” ( Psychology Today ). Why Use Cash?

Prairie Eco-Thrifter

Using cash is seems tougher psychologically. Back in my teens and early twenties, Mom used to yell at me about not carrying enough cash. She envisioned me running out of gasoline and not being able to get home. At the time, I didn’t have credit cards so it was a valid concern. Either I would be walking or using my last quarter in the pay phone to call home and beg someone to come get me. As an adult, I use both cash and credit as well as checks.

A true friendship requires two people who aren’t selfish and truly care about one another. “If someone is both totally self-involved and uncaring about anyone else, they are not likely to be very responsive to you in any way other than evaluating how you meet their needs” ( Psychology Today ). Friendships are necessary for our survival. We’re social creatures, and we crave interaction.

How to Get Back Into the Reading Habit and Find More Time for Reading

According to Dr. Geoff Kauffman, one of the authors of a report published in the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology , “‘When people read a fictional story, they vicariously experience their favorite character’s emotions, thoughts and beliefs in the process.’ As a child and young adult, I was a voracious reader. Years ago, I lacked self esteem – although I had lots of encouragement from my parents I was a shy girl, who felt inferior to others. Over the years, with effort and with each ensuing success, I have gained self-confidence.
