I had three baby showers when I was pregnant for my son–one from each side of the family and one from my co-workers. Many of the other items I needed like cloth diapers and clothes for the baby in bigger sizes I bought from garage sales. There was very little I had to buy for my child after these showers.

I took at least three trunks full of “stuff” to Goodwill, I had a garage sale, and I sold things online. I’ve taken pictures of my son’s favorite preschool paintings and drawings, and when I see a good deal on photo books, I’m going to create one for him and toss the originals.

Buying personal finance books at garage sales and reading them one after another to make sure you have a basis of knowledge on money management. My son declined to do it for her until after she had tried and tried again. Otherwise it was too boring, too labor intensive and too time consuming to do.
