Five Frugal Things | I changed my oil!

The Frugal Girl

1. Lisey helped me change my oil Despite my whole, “You don’t need whiskers to do that” philosophy, I have never really done much work on my car. I usually just dropped the van off at a trusted mechanic for any maintenance needs. But Lisey said, “Mom, let’s change your oil together next time!” And last week, my oil change light came on.

Thankful Thursday | a Lisey birthday

The Frugal Girl

This week, I am thankful: for another birthday with Lisey Since Lisey decided to live with me and commute to school for her last two semesters, this year has been an expected bonus year of having her around. She graduates this spring, so this is probably the last year she will have a birthday at home, and it feels like a special gift because I thought that ship had already sailed!

Scuffed Table Updates! (the middle)

The Frugal Girl

Usually, I don’t do a post about a piece of furniture until I’m all done with it, but since everyone is quite invested in this $5 Facebook Marketplace table, today you get a post that is neither a before nor an after. It’s a…middle. In case you are just joining us, I saw a $5 table on Facebook Marketplace, and hilariously, it was described as having a “scuffed top” I joked that no one in their right mind would pay $5 for it.

Thankful Thursday | Guys! I have a grill again!

The Frugal Girl

This week, I am thankful: that my dad brought me a grill! My beloved Weber grill is on the deck at my old house, so I’ve been without a grill the whole time I’ve lived here at my rental. I was poking around on Facebook Marketplace to see if I could find a used Weber grill, but then my dad told me he’d rescued and rehabbed a Weber grill that he’d seen left out for trash pickup.

What I Spent Sigh…I feel like I have been catching cold after cold! I had no sooner gotten over my post-skiing cold (and the sinus infection that followed), when I came down with another one. How I feel about this string of sickness It’s not flu, it’s not covid, it’s not strep (got tested and all negative). I just seem to be catching alllllll the colds I avoided last year.

Q&A | Hungry Harvest, Nursing School, Sonia’s Hair, and Cheeseburger Soup

The Frugal Girl

Hello, hello! It’s Q&A time. ? Do you find Hungry Harvest cost-effective for your current family/life situation? -Linda From the beginning, I haven’t really gotten Hungry Harvest boxes in order to be cost-effective. I started getting the boxes because I support Hungry Harvest’s mission of rescuing food that might otherwise go to waste, and giving producers a way to recoup some money from that produce.

American Giant Hoodie Dress Review

The Frugal Girl

A few months ago when American Giant was running their Christmas flash sales, they offered to send me an item for review purposes. I asked for their hoodie dress , but it didn’t arrive in time for the flash sale. Better late than never, though, so I’m gonna tell you about it today! An American Giant refresher American Giant is a privately-owned company that makes 100% American-made clothing.

Five Frugal Things | I don’t need the math credit!

The Frugal Girl

1. I got a CLEP exam refund After several days of burying my nose in college algebra CLEP test prep, I emailed the nursing program coordinator to ask a question and YOU GUYS!! I found out that I don’t actually need the college algebra credit after all. (!!!!!) My advisor gave me the wrong info; the new policy goes into effect for the nursing class that starts the semester after I want to start.

Five Frugal Things | Refunds, lamps, & a toaster oven

The Frugal Girl

I’ve still been busy working on getting my money back for all my CLEP-related expenses! 1. I got a $30 testing center refund In addition to the CLEP voucher fee, I had also paid a $30 testing fee to my college. I emailed them as soon as I got the news about the test (no one was answering the phone), but then I didn’t hear anything for several days.

Thankful Thursday | frost and a jellyfish

The Frugal Girl

This week, I am thankful: for a little bit of frost Yes, I’m excited for spring! But I can still appreciate a good frosty morning too. And that’s especially true if the frosty morning comes with generous sunshine. that I’m not sick If I believed in jinxing, I’d be biting my tongue right now, because this is basically the first week since the end of January that I have been entirely free of sickness.

A failed bread dough rescue with WilliamB

The Frugal Girl

Some weeks ago, reader WilliamB messaged me with a bread problem (from a Bernard Clayton brioche recipe). I did my best to help, and we had a pretty extensive conversation with many photo updates about how the bread rescue was going. WilliamB suggested that this might make a fun blog post, so today I’m collating my collection of words and photos from the conversation!

How I fixed my rusty Christmas tree stand

The Frugal Girl

Geez, I’ve started this sentence over like five times and it still feels awkward. Ok. This is the Christmas tree stand that soon-to-be-ex and I purchased the first Christmas after we got married. It’s a Wal-Mart purchase, circa 1997, and I can remember thinking even back then that this picture looked out of date! Anyway, it’s been in use every Christmas since then.

Five Frugal Things | I bought another dress

The Frugal Girl

1. I bought another American Giant hoodie dress I don’t know if this is technically frugal or not…but when I was writing my American Giant hoodie dress review post last week, I was poking around online to see what secondhand options were out there. My original AG hoodie dress I saw a light pink one on eBay for $42, but it was an XS. I thought my green dress was a medium, so I wrote off the XS right away.
