We spoiled our children and we apparently are even more intent on doing so with our grandchildren! Boomers claim to have redefined many aspects of life – from open family dialoge to ways to influence politics, now are they redefining grandparenthood? My parents were somewhat more interactive with their grandchildren (my kids).

Daughters and sons of very wealthy families sometimes want to disown the family wealth in order to prove themselves. Some grown children move thousands of miles away and change their names in order to avoid the ‘taint’ of the wealth and family name. Parents may be trying to keep the family together.

Although I live 200+ miles away from my two grandkids, I try to get them for a week or so during the summer. There are many documented benefits to utilizing grandparents to watch grandkids. Although using relatives to kid sit can be fraught with stress, anxiety and cause for family arguments, many families do it successfully.

Many well to do families have been counting on this as a way to pass along significant wealth to their next generations. First, if I had managed to convert everything to a Roth, the grandkids would be swamped with hundreds of thousands of dollars a year. Roth IRA contributions are made post tax.

She is soon to be 92 years old and uses her position as the family matriarch to teach the rest of us to be grateful. When she saw that her great-grandchildren were not writing thank you notes for her gifts to them, she sent their parents a set of Thank you note cards with envelopes and postage! She is spunky and outspoken.

Gather the family. Wouldn’t it be fun to have a place where our sons, their wives and our grandchildren could come together to play, visit and bond? My Grandkids have grown up visiting the lake condo and love it. Our family has gathered multiple times across the years to enjoy the condo and the area.

Recently, an extended family trip to Hawaii got put on hold due to costs. I followed my own advice and tried to be very clear on what parts my spouse and I would be able to handle for the rest of the family – financially. I was raised in a family that went on a two week road trip every year, no matter what.
