Food was preserved by canning, drying or storing in a cool cellar or the ice house. For humans, the most basic needs are air to breathe, some kind of food to eat and water to drink.

Most telephones were on a party line (and yes the parties did ease drop on each other, but they also let us do ‘conference’ calls). Food/shopping. Fast food was rare. Most food at the grocery store came from the USA. Gasoline stations did not serve food, have coffee or provide bath rooms.
