We spoiled our children and we apparently are even more intent on doing so with our grandchildren! My parents were somewhat more interactive with their grandchildren (my kids). Why are we spending more on our grandchildren? It never occurred to me to ask Mom or Mom-in-law to come watch my kids. It’s just fun!

I felt it would give them control over me in some fashion and fiercely wanted my independence. Lets explore the topic of parents giving money to grown offspring. Why do parents want to give adult offspring money? Giving initial help to adult offspring can be one way of helping them stay out of the parental nest.

I found pleasure in thinking about giving our children and grandchildren the opportunity to see part of the world they might not otherwise see. Mom described herself as a gypsy (since she loved to go, go and go some more). Normally I am very frugal and a saver, but this trip meant more to me than the money involved.

The Grandkids are 9 and 12 now with lots of time before they have to start supporting themselves somehow. Years later, I asked my Mom why she hadn’t suggested another path for me, since there were no jobs. Sometimes the things that make you most uncomfortable can be the things that give you the most joy.
