What if dating your spouse was simple, straightforward and, well, flat-out cheap? If you’d like that vivacity and want to enjoy many years together, give those dates the priority. Don’t give up if they’re awkward at first. Rent a learn-to-dance video at the library and take a laptop to a local park at night.

Back when I was engaged and living on my own for the first time (I lived with my parents while in grad school to save on rent), I went to the library a lot and found a copy of the Tightwad Gazette. Eventually, when I was married and working at a library I ordered my own copy of the Complete Tightwad Gazette–and I still have it!

Rent instead of own. If you calculate your mortgage interest, the cost of insurance and maintenance, buying can be much more expensive than renting. And if you rent, save money and then invest the difference. You can end up well ahead in the long run. Go to the library. Be comfortable, but don’t overdo it.

Visit your local library for free story hours. Rent free children’s movies from your local library. Ask a local bakery if they will give tours. Attend a free crafting session at your local library. Take advantage of free educational classes or presentations offered by your local library. Just call!

I search around the internet, use atlas information and check out travel books in the library and bookstore. We went by train, rented a car to see the sights at Yellowstone and flew back home. Give them a break and find someone new to enjoy the journey with you – perhaps a friend, a co-worker or another relative.

Water – Unless you have a well, you probably pay for your water. I’ve been an avid gym member for over 20 years, so I will never tell anyone to give up their gym membership if they truly use it. Find a fitness video series that you enjoy and rent from the library or purchase. Gym Membership.
