We spoiled our children and we apparently are even more intent on doing so with our grandchildren! My parents were somewhat more interactive with their grandchildren (my kids). Why are we spending more on our grandchildren? We want some influence over how our grandchildren are raised. They tolerated our presence.

Although I live 200+ miles away from my two grandkids, I try to get them for a week or so during the summer. There are many documented benefits to utilizing grandparents to watch grandkids. On the other hand, if your parent watches the kids in their home, they may be considered an independent contractor instead of an employee.

Even the New York Times acknowledges that: As boomers join the ranks of grandparents, many are financing vacations for their children and grandchildren. My WWII era uncle and his wife made trips annually with one of their 4 grandchildren (a different one each year). We took my Mom with us to Florida in the 1980’s.

I found pleasure in thinking about giving our children and grandchildren the opportunity to see part of the world they might not otherwise see. He loves sticking to routine, staying home and accomplishing work activities. Normally I am very frugal and a saver, but this trip meant more to me than the money involved.

The Grandkids are 9 and 12 now with lots of time before they have to start supporting themselves somehow. Perhaps you want (or need) to be home with family or have time for friends a certain number of hours or for certain parts of the day or year. Pick based on hours worked/lifestyle. You could choose a job based on that.

My Grandparents have lots of kids and even more grandkids. Add in the spouses, significant others and now great-grandchildren and that’s a ton of gifts. My husband is a huge fan on Home Depot. In my family we make Christmas lists. If Grandad doesn’t get your list after Thanksgiving, you don’t get a gift.
