Wouldn’t it be fun to have a place where our sons, their wives and our grandchildren could come together to play, visit and bond? My Grandkids have grown up visiting the lake condo and love it. We used it as a home base to explore many activities and attractions within a days drive. Gather the family.

As it turns out, my estimate for a 2 week trip to Hawaii (one week on Oahu and one on the Big Island) would have been over $20,000 US Dollars. Naturally, my spouse and I had a discussion on how much we wanted to fund for our two sons and their families. One son is trying to rebuild finances after an expensive year.

I thought there would be ‘strings’ attached to the use of the money. Daughters and sons of very wealthy families sometimes want to disown the family wealth in order to prove themselves. Making sure the grandchildren have the desired benefits enhances their peace of mind. I wanted to prove myself.

The Grandkids are 9 and 12 now with lots of time before they have to start supporting themselves somehow. I didn’t even realize that most jobs required a doctorate in Psychology to really use the knowledge in a career. Another criteria used for this pick might be the length of the commute or the frequency of travel.

Even the New York Times acknowledges that: As boomers join the ranks of grandparents, many are financing vacations for their children and grandchildren. My WWII era uncle and his wife made trips annually with one of their 4 grandchildren (a different one each year). We took my Mom with us to Florida in the 1980’s.
