We spoiled our children and we apparently are even more intent on doing so with our grandchildren! They rarely gave us toys or money. My parents were somewhat more interactive with their grandchildren (my kids). They drove the 200 mile trip on holidays and birthdays to celebrate with us. They tolerated our presence.

Although I live 200+ miles away from my two grandkids, I try to get them for a week or so during the summer. There are many documented benefits to utilizing grandparents to watch grandkids. Although using relatives to kid sit can be fraught with stress, anxiety and cause for family arguments, many families do it successfully.

She is soon to be 92 years old and uses her position as the family matriarch to teach the rest of us to be grateful. When she saw that her great-grandchildren were not writing thank you notes for her gifts to them, she sent their parents a set of Thank you note cards with envelopes and postage! With age, sometimes comes wisdom.

The money in the IRA can be used during your lifetime, but then can accumulate tax free while the next guy in line for it takes minimum distributions over his life. First, if I had managed to convert everything to a Roth, the grandkids would be swamped with hundreds of thousands of dollars a year.

Wouldn’t it be fun to have a place where our sons, their wives and our grandchildren could come together to play, visit and bond? My Grandkids have grown up visiting the lake condo and love it. We used it as a home base to explore many activities and attractions within a days drive. Gather the family.

I thought there would be ‘strings’ attached to the use of the money. Making sure the grandchildren have the desired benefits enhances their peace of mind. It is true that grandparents love to ‘spoil’ the grandkids (I know this because I am a grandparent). I wanted to prove myself.

I found pleasure in thinking about giving our children and grandchildren the opportunity to see part of the world they might not otherwise see. Normally I am very frugal and a saver, but this trip meant more to me than the money involved. I believed it would provide the chance to try new things (to see, to do, to eat).
