Recycling is great for the environment and we should all be doing it (in spite of my title), but reusing is even better. When you can reuse or re-purpose an item, you are not only saving it from the landfills, but you are also saving the expense and energy which would have been expended when you recycle. Below is a list of things I (or hubby) have personally saved and reused. Shopping bags are reused as carry alls for gifts and travel needs. Brown grocery bag s (when we can get them) are used for wrapping boxes for mailing and artwork by children as well as lining the kitchen trash can. These days most grocery stores no longer.

Learn to hem and patch and sew on buttons to repair minor issues with clothing. If one feature goes out (like an ice maker on a freezer), but the rest of the unit still works fine, think about using an alternative to extend the life of the appliance (like making your own ice, or buying a bag a week at the grocery).
