We as parents are usually the first and primary source of their learned behavior, even as they grow into their teenage years. You can even reward them with extra allowance with the money saved on gasoline and car upkeep. Stress the importance of saving and staying away from debt. Our children learn by example.

How did you get interested in saving money? When my brother and I were growing up, our parents didn’t have much discretionary income. I learned to save money by watching my parents. (I My dad was a blue-collar worker – a machine operator on the railroad who sometimes got laid off for periods of time in the winter.
