Back when I was engaged and living on my own for the first time (I lived with my parents while in grad school to save on rent), I went to the library a lot and found a copy of the Tightwad Gazette. We rent now and are much happier. People are surprised that we are in our fifties and renting, but it works for us.

Every year, we split the rent on a beach condo with other family members to make a week away affordable for everyone involved. Usually there is enough leftovers for the last night to be a ‘clean out the fridge’ night. dishwasher detergent, dish soap, paper towels, napkins. Our summer destination of choice is the beach.

She offered to do people’s taxes, or get their bookkeeping organized in exchange for a discount on her rent, or car repairs. There are things we had to do that made us look weird: home school, skip eating out as much with family, doing my own hair & nails, getting a wardrobe from the thrift store and forgoing paper towels.
