When a building in our town went into foreclosure in 2012, we considered the opportunity to own. The building offered so much potential, but needed a lot of work and we set out to renovate our dream office. We paid off our first renovation loan in December 2014 and the next loan should be paid off by the end of this summer.

The journey started in 2012 when we bought an office building for our business and then found ourselves with a lot of debt and not enough cash flow. Today I am proud to say that we have completed our second step : Increase business emergency savings to a specific number. Over our 14 years in business, we have had to rely on our savings a few times to help cover expenses during tough months. It happened in 2006 and again in late 2012 to early 2013.

I am totally paraphrasing the year, but had it not been for the money in our emergency savings, we would most likely have used credit cards to survive. We spent the next few years building our savings back up to the level we had prior to 2007. What got us through financially? Our emergency fund. Yep, life was good.

In September 2019, my husband and I accomplished our biggest financial goal in our almost 20 years of marriage. How we got to six figures of non-mortgage debt: In the summer of 2012, we found an opportunity to purchase an office building for our small business. Also, the monthly mortgage payment was less than our rent payment.
