The journey started in 2012 when we bought an office building for our business and then found ourselves with a lot of debt and not enough cash flow. To ease my anxiety about our new loans, we took the Financial Peace University home course and it changed how we thought about debt.

My husband and I have four kids ranging from age 3-8, and I am a stay-at-home mom. I think I started reading FG regularly in 2018 or 2019. and realized we should pay off this debt as quickly as possible. The teachers and education are wonderful and our kids are thriving there so we will continue it as long as we can afford to.

I said goodbye to mini-van life in January when we traded in our 2007 Honda Odyssey for a 2018 Toyota Highlander. I talk a lot about debt freedom and that is still a goal of ours, and our Debt Freedom Plan will be adjusted. And we paid off six figures of business debt before, we will pay off this car loan too.

After 20 years, I switched from Quicken software to You Need a Budget (YNAB) software in 2018 for our household. Home, auto, kids, dog, medical, vacation, blah blah blah…it all adds up and it all needs to fit into our budget. Implement our Debt Freedom Plan. Our kids spent their first week of summer vacation at the beach with their Girl Scouts troop. The restaurant isn’t exactly kid-friendly and we were waiting for the right time to use. It was a week spent together without having to worry about getting our kids from one activity to the other. We want to be debt free.
