How Our Debt Freedom Plan Prepared Us for the Pandemic. I am totally paraphrasing the year, but had it not been for the money in our emergency savings, we would most likely have used credit cards to survive. We’d survived the dip in 2007, carried no credit card debt, and we were contributing to our retirement.

I have used the extra money to pay off debt, fund family trips, or build up our Christmas savings. We’ve had an Aflac Accident plan for many years and have never needed it until the fall of 2020 when we used it twice. Credit Card Cash Back: $175. Yep, I found a $20 bill while running on the beach!

In January 2020, we booked round-trip flights to Paris for the four of us. My total of found money in February: $3433.68. Airfare Refund: $2700.

This money gets sent automatically to the 529 accounts we set up for our girls in 2020. Credit cards are a tricky subject and we pay off the balance every month, so I will write more about this soon. I started searching and test drove a pre-owned Highlander in January 2020. We earned $150 from our Upromise Mastercard.
