I got brand new clothes , a stroller, a playpen, toys, blankets, the list goes on and on. Many of the other items I needed like cloth diapers and clothes for the baby in bigger sizes I bought from garage sales. Garlick got all of her children’s clothes and gear from friends, family, and sites like Freecycle.

I loved the article, so I started hitting up your archives. I have made many money mistakes over the years – when I was single, I bought so many clothes and books! I also spend too much money on clothes for this kid (not like designer, just Old Navy type!) How did you get interested in saving money?

He built his own garage. At garage sales, are you attracted to those still usable but slightly defective items that no one else wants? He made his own electric lawnmower. He fixed his own car. He was a trained radio and TV repairman, when those had tubes. I wish he was still around. I’ve got a lot of things that need fixing!

I've been tackling clutter since January and I had the boxes stacked in my garage to prove it. Clothing and certain household items can be deducted as long as they are in "good used condition or better." The fair market value of used clothing and other personal items is usually far less than the price you paid for them.

But I had no idea where to start or how to go about simplifying my life until I read a magazine article about the psychological benefits of de-cluttering your workspace. I was so inspired that I followed some more of the advice in that article. Wipe the drawer with a damp cloth and replace only the items you have decided to keep.
