You can’t always count on credit cards or checks being accepted. My grown son and his wife accompanied us on a day trip several years ago. My son whipped out his credit card to pay for their meal and was stopped cold when he found out the place didn’t take credit. Know what you have.

But, even so, we did manage to raise our sons to be financially capable adults. No, we won’t put that on the credit card and pay for it later. And they will see that you put money aside in savings. Encourage them to save. Take them to the bank and let them see you make your deposits. Take them into the bank.

My son knows that there are two meeting points out (depending on whether he leaves out the front or out the back) in our neighborhood. Credit card with an adequate limit. Financial accounts numbers (memorize them and/or save them in digital form, protected by a password or encryption).

It’s quite another to let a few thousand dollars (or even more) sit in a low-yield bank account that doesn’t serve much of a purpose. I also find that putting my money to work for extracurricular activities for my son, and for cultural experiences like plays and concerts, are investments in my lifestyle.

Our son is 29 and biological. We lived off my salary and banked Alan’s even before we were married so that we could build our own house (literally), paying cash as we went. Now I wish those dollars had gone into our savings accounts. I grew up in banking and held other finance-related positions during my working years.
