I was determined to buy a house that was less than we could afford. We ending up buying our current home in 2015, when local prices and interest rates were significantly lower. Childhood joy.

We paid an excavator (to dig the hole for the foundation), a well driller and a cabinet maker (for our kitchen and bathroom cabinets). Alan and I, by choice, bought land in an area with low property taxes. Had we not fallen in love with the locale, it wouldn’t have mattered how low the taxes were, but fall in love we did.

Also to top it off, I had a huge property tax due that month for our office building that was going to be difficult to pay for in light of the circumstances. It was a scary time for us.
