They provided Christmas and birthday toys and on occasion provided direct financial aid. It never occurred to me to ask Mom or Mom-in-law to come watch my kids. Seeing the joy of discovery on a child’s face or watching them learn a new skill or develop a new talent is just plain fun, no matter the cost in money or time.

On Christmas eve, gangs of kids caroled from house to house. Christmas was a one week event – between Dec 25 and Jan. Most city folks bought their tree at a lot, Christmas tree farms weren’t open to individuals. Food/shopping. Fast food was rare. Most food at the grocery store came from the USA.

They never check to watch for problems and soon there are little sacs hanging from the bushes. If they manage to strip all the leaves off the tree they stared with, the larvae drop off the tree and crawl to another to get food. Once you have collected all the worms you can see, pour some gasoline over them and light a fire.
