Learn to hem and patch and sew on buttons to repair minor issues with clothing. Learn how to remove spots and do it as soon as the clothing gets dirty. Buy good clothing, used. Avoid buying cheap clothing new. Pass down serviceable clothing from child to child. Use up your food. Plan uses for your leftovers.

I have made many money mistakes over the years – when I was single, I bought so many clothes and books! I also spend too much money on clothes for this kid (not like designer, just Old Navy type!) That was true for me as well, but I also think that poverty is a very relative concept. In their first home together, built out in the new suburbs (then it was country), Mom endured well water and an outhouse. Plus, it can be really inconvenient to “make do or do without!” Do you have a funny story about making do?

This includes Christmas savings, extra mortgage payment, clothing, hobbies, anything frivolous, and sadly, contributions to charities and our retirement will also be paused. We didn’t have enough cash saved to buy a car without a loan and that wasn’t sitting well with me. Boy, are we glad we made that decision.

Instead they had a well, an outhouse, a wood burning stove for heat and another for cooking. Americans pride themselves on their ‘Yankee ingenuity’ – making do or doing without. Whenever we get into situations which threaten our self-reliance, we will find our freedoms threatened as well.

I just love the scent and how well it cleans my clothes. I do my best to find deals and using P&G coupons, I usually don’t have to pay full price. My clothes come out smelling so fresh and clean. But for those of you doing 12, 14 and 17 loads it won’t last quite as long! Mmmm, love that scent!

Rinse well, stuff loose with white paper towels or white cotton (so the shoe will hold its shape) and then air dry. If you dry them in the sun, it will help brighten the light colors and do some disinfecting. On plain leather shoes, scuff marks can usually be rubbed out with a damp cloth (and possibly a tiny bit of cleanser).
