A few years back, my extended family took a trip to Holland, Michigan. I’m 47, married, and living amongst the cornfields in a college town in the Midwest U.S. My family loves watching movies and tv series together, and having regular game nights. A freebie cabinet. The more kids I could “adopt”, the better! Childhood joy.

I manage the finances for our business and our family and by August 2013, I felt the weight of the situation. On top of our normal day to day expenses, the new property taxes were due, we had more ownership expenses than we realized, and we had a family to feed. My husband and I had children later in life.

We consider her our “bonus kid” and our family is extremely close. I learned from the best, but I believe that a personal finance course should be a requirement for both high school and college graduation. Aside from those exceptions, we did all the work ourselves and with the help of family. Our son is 29 and biological.
