Before kids, I spent my free-time volunteering at a stray rescue shelter for dogs. After I had kids, I swapped that time to growing all sorts of interesting heirloom foods in my backyard. I started reading The Frugal Girl back in 2010 when Kristen’s kids were still itty bitty. The more kids I could “adopt”, the better!

Ten years after I earned that BA, I was back in community college earning credits to become a computer programmer – a field I did research beforehand and one which provided ample returns on my time and money investment. Parents typically want their kids to do better than they did, and often try to help out.

The sales tax, plus the ongoing higher property tax and insurance are really turning him off – and the van does fine if we drive it locally or just for a few hours to the lake. Even according to boating sites, like Discover Boating , the costs are high: “In 2012, the average retail price of an outboard boat was $20,387. The average retail price of an outboard boat package (boat,engine and trailer) was $32,795.” I even have trouble getting my grown kids to gather there. So why buy?

I’m in my 60’s, I’ve been married to the love of my life for 44 years and we have two adult “kids.” We consider her our “bonus kid” and our family is extremely close. I still remember saving my change as a kid so I could “shop” for books at yard sales.) Our son is 29 and biological. Alan doesn’t share that regret. Go figure.
