While we were still renting an apartment, I researched areas with lower property taxes, scouted out my ideal neighborhoods, and waited for a smaller, less expensive house to come on the market.

On top of our normal day to day expenses, the new property taxes were due, we had more ownership expenses than we realized, and we had a family to feed. We had our daughters later in life and at a crucial time in our lives, I stopped our retirement contribution. I had to cut something from our spending and do it quickly.

Our daughter is 24 and was adopted from Eastern Europe when she was one week short of a year old. He married the love of his life almost two years ago, so now we have a daughter-in-law, too. I learned from the best, but I believe that a personal finance course should be a requirement for both high school and college graduation.
