Back when I was engaged and living on my own for the first time (I lived with my parents while in grad school to save on rent), I went to the library a lot and found a copy of the Tightwad Gazette. We rent now and are much happier. People are surprised that we are in our fifties and renting, but it works for us.

We especially need essential stuff, like food, water, shelter, heat, clothing, defensive and offensive protection. We rent a shelter (usually), and it is bare! You donate to suitable charities. I like my stuff and I refuse to acquiesce to the guilt trips imposed by others. Humans need stuff. We need stuff to survive.

Use all the food you have, and freeze it if you know you won’t use it up before it expires. Instead of seeing a movie, rent. trips, donating to our church, helping friends in need. Or rent it from the library. Then for the other meals needed I see. what is on sale and plan meals based on those ingredients.

We rented the scaffolding for $50 from Menards so I could finish this massive painting project. Fancy restaurant food. I’d send some to my nieces to help with their college expenses and would donate half to our local food pantry. My husband is an engineer and we’ve been married for 21 years.
